SOUTH CHIOS TOUR (MESTA-PYRGI-EMPOREIOS-MAVRA VOLIA BEACH-MASTIC MUSEUM- ARMOLIA)

1. Mesta

Our south Chios tour starts from “Deniz tours” office (Neoreion 33, Port of Chios). Our first stop is Mesta village which is the best preserved medieval Mastic village of Chios, where cultivation of mastic (the unique product known worldwide) is thriving. Walking through the narrow streets and stone houses, under the arches will make you feel like you are travelling back in time. We will visit the church of Taxiarchis and we will have free time at the central square before visiting our second stop.

2. Pyrgi

Our second stop is Pyrgi village, also called the “painted” village due to the fine decoration of the houses: grey and white geometrical shapes decorate the facades of the houses, according to the Italian architecture. It is the biggest medieval village of the Mastic villages. You can visit a multitude of interesting churches, most notably the 13th century Byzantine church of the Holy Apostiles and the Temple of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, built in 1694. We have free time at the central square and we depart for the volcanic beach “Mavra Volia” (Black Pebbles) which took its name from the black pebbles and sand that were debouched there from a volcano. It is a stunning scenery with blue crystal water and rocky hills and it is one of the most famous beaches in Greece. We have free time for lunch in one of the seafront restaurants in Emporeios Port which are offering a variety of fresh fish, sea food and other traditional local delicacies.

3. Chios Mastic Museum(optional stop)

Chios Mastic museum which is a must see place if you want to gain deeper knowledge of the history of the traditional cultivation of the most famous product of Chios, the mastic.

4. Armolia

Our last stop is Armolia village where you can buy one of the famous handmade ceramic products as the residents of Armolia maintain a long tradition in ceramic pottery. Their products are uniquely decorated with flowers, birds and fish designs.

In the afternoon we return to Chios town.
