Central-West Chios Tour

CENTRAL-WEST CHIOS TOUR: NEA MONI – ANAVATOS – AVGONYMA-CITRUS MUSEUM CAFE

Our central-west Chios tour starts from Deniz tours office (Neoreion 33, port of Chios). Our first stop is Nea Moni, which is a monastery included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1990 and is known worldwide for its exceptional mosaics. The mosaics of Nea Moni are in the top three ones of Greece during Middle Age period. It was founded in the 11th century.

Our next stop is the medieval village of Anavatos, or otherwise called “Mystras of the Aegean”. It is an almost abandoned settlement and it lies on the top of a steep hill of 450 meters. The founding of Anavatos dates back to the Middle Byzantine times and according to tradition it was created by the workers who arrived in Chios for the construction of Nea Moni. The walk through the beautiful abandoned stone houses with the magnificent view creates a unique experience. The village has been declared as a preservable monument.

Our third stop is the perfectly preserved medieval village of Avgonyma. The village has many beautiful stone houses, narrow streets and offers a great view to the Aegean Sea. You will have free time to enjoy your lunch in one of the traditional local restaurants.

Our last stop is Kampos area, which is protected by the Greek Ministry for Culture, as a historic site and a traditional settlement. The whole area is covered with citrus orchards, flowers and traditional orange-red stone houses with high stone walls which create a magnificent picturesque landscape. During 14th century the area was chosen by the Genoese and many local aristocratic families to build their villas and most of these buildings remain in great condition until today. The “Citrus”, museum – café, lies in the area, giving the chance to the visitors to admire its beauty from the interior. The museum part is housed in the original, restored mansion and the cafe includes also a shop for handmade sweets and products, making it easy for you to take home some of these unique and tasteful memories.

In the afternoon we return to the city center of Chios.
