CHIOS MASTIC MUSEUM
The Chios Mastic Museum is dedicated to the unique product of mastic which is cultivated and produced only in Chios, and to be more exact in the southern part of the island and nowhere else in the world. The museum is located near Pyrgi village, in Mastichochoria area of Southern Chios and it is just another reason to visit the island of Chios. Built on a 12.000 m2 land with part covered with mastic trees, it opened its doors to the public in 2016.
The purpose behind its creation was to demonstrate the history of the mastic tree’s cultivation, harvesting and processing. The permanent exhibition deals with mastic as a unique natural product. The visitor can learn about the mastic tree and its resin, explore the expertise demanded in order to cultivate this unique product and follow the route of the product through time. In order to have a complete experience the visitor can see a real field with mastic trees outside of the museum. The mastic has been inscribed by UNESCO in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
